
President Droupadi Murmu today highlighted the growing societal concern of depression, stressing that lifestyle modifications can play a key role in achieving mental well-being. Speaking at the fifth convocation ceremony of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the President underlined that alongside medical treatment, greater public awareness is essential in addressing mental health challenges.
She pointed out that practices such as yoga and pranayama can significantly benefit mental health, and urged the medical community to educate the public about the advantages of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
President Murmu also addressed the rising issue of obesity, labelling it a serious lifestyle-related concern. She noted that this condition can be managed through a disciplined daily routine, improved dietary habits, and regular physical activity. She called upon doctors to take a proactive role in raising awareness about these preventive measures within society.
Encouraging the medical fraternity to focus on local healthcare challenges, the President drew attention to two diseases commonly affecting tribal populations—Japanese Encephalitis and Sickle Cell Anemia. She acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts in these areas and urged doctors to conduct in-depth research to improve treatment outcomes for such diseases.
Expressing satisfaction with the growth of AIIMS Bhubaneswar over the past 12 years, President Murmu commended the institute’s achievements in patient care, research, and community outreach. She noted that the institute has earned the trust of people not only in Odisha but also in neighbouring states like West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.
She also lauded the recognition AIIMS Bhubaneswar has received from the World Health Organization, including the Asia Safe Surgical Implant Consortium QIP Award for excellence in surgical instrument and implant reprocessing. The institute’s continued excellence in sanitation and hospital services has earned it the National Kayakalp Award for five consecutive years.
President Murmu emphasized the pivotal role AIIMS institutions across the country are playing in delivering advanced, affordable healthcare through cutting-edge medical science and skilled professionals. She expressed confidence that India is on track to become a global leader in healthcare.
Concluding her address, the President noted that advancements in medical research have significantly improved treatment protocols and reduced the prevalence of various epidemics. Diseases such as smallpox, leprosy, polio, and tuberculosis have seen a sharp decline, thanks to the dedicated efforts of healthcare professionals, researchers, social workers, and government agencies.
