For the first time in Chhattisgarh, a full awake brain-tumour surgery using neuromonitoring was successfully carried out in Raipur.
A 25-year-old patient, who had been suffering from frequent seizures and was found to have a tumour located in the region of the brain responsible for speech and motor control on the right side of the body, underwent the procedure at MMI Narayana Health Hospital.
Given the sensitive location of the tumour, doctors opted for a total awake craniotomy — the patient stayed fully awake under local anaesthesia while the surgical team used real-time neuromonitoring. During the operation, medical staff continuously asked the patient to perform limb movements and other basic tasks to monitor brain function and ensure that critical areas were not damaged.
The surgery resulted in complete tumour removal while preserving vital functions. The patient recovered quickly and was discharged symptom-free on the third day after the procedure.
This minimally invasive, awake approach — utilising neuro-monitoring — is especially valuable for tumours located near essential brain regions governing speech and movement, as it reduces the risk of complications such as paralysis, language impairment, or memory loss compared with traditional methods.
The success of this landmark surgery marks a significant advance for healthcare in the state, demonstrating that complex neurosurgical procedures can be safely and effectively performed in Chhattisgarh.
