Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, chaired a ‘Kayakalp Manthan’ today with officials from Central Government hospitals, NGOs, and senior health ministry representatives to review the progress and chart the future of the Kayakalp Scheme. Launched in 2015 with 10 hospitals, the initiative has now expanded to 25 Central Government institutions and many state-run hospitals under the National Health Mission (NHM). It aims to enhance cleanliness, hygiene, and infection control in public healthcare facilities.

Shri Nadda emphasized the progress made over the last decade but noted that much more needs to be done. He called for a patient-centric healthcare system and highlighted that while quality clinical care is often delivered, many patients still leave dissatisfied due to poor communication, unfriendly environments, or inadequate amenities.

The Minister urged stakeholders to examine the public perception of government hospitals and address factors such as infrastructure, staff behavior, and cleanliness that impact this image. He stressed the need for better hospital management and prioritization of services to tackle persistent challenges.

A key focus of the Manthan was the importance of Jan Bhagidari—people’s participation—in achieving better healthcare outcomes. Shri Nadda advocated for stronger community engagement and a sense of ownership toward healthcare institutions, positioning this as essential for the scheme’s sustained success.

Looking ahead, he underscored the need to strengthen state-level hospitals and Sub-Health Centres (SHCs) to ease the burden on premier institutions. Future efforts will focus on training, innovation, eco-friendly approaches, and technology integration.

Shri Nadda concluded by reaffirming that Kayakalp is more than a cleanliness initiative—it is a transformation in how healthcare is delivered. He called on all stakeholders to take the insights from this discussion forward and work collaboratively to enhance public healthcare across India.
