Global Health Ltd., the operator of the Medanta hospital chain, has announced a capital expenditure of ₹4,000 crore over the next couple of years to expand its bed capacity to 6,000, up from the current 3,042. According to Group CEO Pankaj Sahni, the expansion will focus on new facilities in Noida, Guwahati, Mumbai, and Delhi, alongside upgrades to existing hospitals.
"Our plan is to scale up to 6,000 beds, and we’ve allocated around ₹4,000 crore for this expansion," Sahni said in a recent interview with NDTV Profit. “The Noida hospital, expected to be operational in the coming months, will receive the largest share of this fiscal’s capex.”
Despite a 20% year-on-year decline in net profit to ₹101 crore during the January–March quarter, Global Health reported a 15% increase in revenue from operations to ₹931 crore. For FY25, the company’s EBITDA margin narrowed slightly to 25.4% from 26.1% in FY24, primarily due to merger-related costs after absorbing its Lucknow unit.
Sahni emphasized the company’s continued focus on volume-driven, value-based growth. “We’ve seen robust EBITDA growth both quarterly and annually,” he noted. “Occupancy rates are improving, and we’re being cautious with tariff hikes to maintain affordability.”
Chairperson and Managing Director Dr. Naresh Trehan reaffirmed Medanta’s commitment to providing world-class care at accessible prices, leveraging its in-house talent development to manage expansion efficiently. “Even with aggressive growth, operational challenges have been minimal due to our strong internal pipeline of trained professionals,” Trehan said.
With its primary footprint in North India, Medanta is now targeting the northeast, while the new Mumbai facility marks its entry into the western region. Future locations are also in the pipeline, reflecting a strategic push to build a pan-India presence.
Trehan highlighted the company’s strong financial position: “We aim to keep debt below 50%. Currently, we carry substantial cash reserves and minimal debt, giving us the flexibility to invest aggressively without financial strain.”
Medanta’s international business, driven by the Gurugram facility, contributes 6% of overall revenue, while hospitals in Lucknow, Patna, and Indore remain domestically focused.
