Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has inaugurated a Sports Injury and Rehabilitation Centre at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital, making it the first civic-run hospital in the city to provide specialised sports injury treatment under one roof.

The centre is equipped with advanced rehabilitation facilities, including an underwater treadmill and a zero-gravity treadmill that enable early movement while reducing joint stress. Digital systems such as D-Wall and Walker View are used to analyse posture, balance and gait to support personalised physiotherapy, alongside equipment for muscle strengthening.

The facility also offers Tecar, ultrasonic, interferential, shockwave, ice and heat therapies. A dedicated 20-bed inpatient ward has been set up for athletes requiring extended recovery.

The centre will function as a multidisciplinary sports medicine unit, bringing together arthroscopic surgeons, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, biophysicists, psychiatrists and dieticians. It aims to deliver comprehensive sports injury management within the public healthcare system, a service previously limited largely to private hospitals.

The facility will cater to athletes across age groups and sporting disciplines, from amateur players to professional sportspersons. The BMC also plans to establish a dedicated Sports Medicine Department at KEM Hospital and gradually expand services based on patient load and demand.
