In a landmark achievement, the Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR) has become the first government institute in India and the second in South Asia to perform Robotic Custom Laser Cataract Surgery using the advanced ALLY Adaptive Cataract Treatment System.

This milestone marks the Ophthalmology Department’s entry into robotic, bladeless, and computer-guided eye surgery with its first-ever Femtosecond Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS).

According to the Ministry of Defence, the procedure was successfully performed by Brigadier SK Mishra on a 61-year-old patient. While conventional cataract surgery remains effective, FLACS represents a breakthrough by automating key steps such as corneal incisions, capsulotomy, and cataract fragmentation with micron-level precision.

The integration of this cutting-edge technology highlights the Armed Forces’ commitment to delivering advanced, safe, and effective healthcare to its personnel and families. With enhanced accuracy and better outcomes, FLACS strengthens the scope of military medicine.
