Apollo Children’s Hospitals in Chennai has achieved a significant milestone, completing over 6,000 pediatric cardiac surgeries and 10,000 interventional procedures since 2009. Renowned for its expertise in managing congenital and acquired heart conditions, the hospital’s Department of Cardiac Sciences has been at the forefront of delivering advanced care to children, including critically ill newborns and infants.

Under the leadership of Dr. Neville Solomon, Senior Consultant Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon, and Dr. C. S. Muthukumaran, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, the team has performed a wide range of complex procedures. These include arterial switch operations, total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) corrections, valve repairs, aortic arch reconstructions, and single ventricle palliation.

Among their most remarkable cases are surgeries on a baby just three hours old and another weighing only 650 grams—demonstrating their capacity to handle highly delicate and high-risk cases.

The hospital follows a multidisciplinary approach, integrating high-resolution diagnostics, advanced imaging technologies, minimally invasive surgical techniques, and specialized pediatric intensive care units. Its achievements also include more than 3,000 complex neonatal surgeries, 40 ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) procedures, pediatric transplants, and 1,500 surgeries conducted internationally, including in Iraq and Nigeria.

Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO of the Chennai region, said the milestone reflects Apollo’s long-standing commitment to excellence and innovation in pediatric healthcare. “Saving a child’s heart changes a family’s future,” he said.
