Ankura Hospital for Women and Children has announced a global milestone in pediatric surgery. Dr. V.V.S. Chandrasekharam, Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology, successfully performed his 900th laparoscopic pyeloplasty in children with ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction — the highest number reported worldwide by any surgeon.

UPJ obstruction is a condition where the connection between the kidney and bladder becomes blocked or narrowed, causing kidney swelling and loss of function. Pyeloplasty is a reconstructive procedure that relieves this obstruction to preserve long-term kidney health.

Highlighting the advantages of the laparoscopic approach, Dr. Chandrasekharam said, “Keyhole surgery has revolutionized pediatric urology. Smaller incisions mean less pain, faster recovery, minimal scarring, and reduced blood loss. These procedures can be safely performed even in newborns as young as one month.”

With over 30 years of expertise, Dr. Chandrasekharam is internationally recognized for his pioneering contributions to pediatric urology. A Gold Medallist from AIIMS, New Delhi, he has trained surgeons across India and abroad, published over 90 scientific papers, authored three books, and introduced several minimally invasive surgical techniques, including procedures for bladder and ureteral reconstruction, nephrectomy, ureteral reimplantation, and duplex kidney surgery.

Ankura Hospital reported a 97–98% success rate for laparoscopic pyeloplasty, making it one of the most reliable and safe interventions for children with severe UPJ obstruction. Many cases are diagnosed during prenatal ultrasounds, and timely surgical intervention ensures preserved kidney function for life.

Congratulating Dr. Chandrasekharam, Dr. K.K. Durga Prasad, Regional Medical Director of Ankura Hospital, said, “This accomplishment reflects our dedication to setting global benchmarks in pediatric care. It strengthens Ankura’s vision of delivering world-class healthcare for children, supported by innovation and expertise.”

Dr. Chandrasekharam and his team will share their clinical outcomes at the upcoming International Pediatric Urology Congress in Europe this September.
