The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, has inaugurated its advanced Robotic Surgery Facility, named Devhast, in the presence of Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, and Shri Shyam Bihari Jaiswal, Hon’ble Health Minister.
The new centre, equipped with cutting-edge robotic technology, enables minimally invasive surgeries with higher precision and safety. Patients are expected to benefit from faster recovery, reduced pain, and shorter hospital stays. Beyond patient care, the facility will also serve as a hub for academic excellence, offering training and research opportunities in robotic-assisted surgery for postgraduate and resident doctors.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai stated, “This marks the beginning of a new era in public healthcare for our state. By introducing robotic-assisted surgery, we are ensuring that patients gain timely access to advanced treatments. This initiative not only benefits patients but also strengthens Chhattisgarh’s position as a centre for medical education and innovation.”
Health Minister Shri Shyam Bihari Jaiswal highlighted that AIIMS Raipur has become the first government medical institute in Central India to introduce robotic surgery services, setting a new benchmark in healthcare, education, and research.
Lt. Gen. Ashok Jindal (Retd.), Executive Director of AIIMS Raipur, described the facility as a significant milestone. He remarked, “Robotic-assisted surgery will improve patient outcomes through precision and minimally invasive techniques while simultaneously advancing surgeon training and academic research. Our goal is to combine patient care with the development of future-ready surgical expertise.”
The centre features a dual-console da Vinci Xi Surgical System and simulation platforms like SimNow, enabling medical trainees to gain hands-on experience in a supervised environment. Initially, robotic surgeries will be offered in Urology, General Surgery, ENT, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Dr. Dibyajyoti Mohanty, Head of General Surgery and Nodal Officer of the programme, along with Dr. Amit Sharma, Head of Urology and Programme Coordinator, shared insights into the system’s applications and benefits.
As part of the inauguration, Ms. Jyotsna Kirado, a B.Sc. Nursing student, was felicitated by the Chief Minister for suggesting the name Devhast.
With this development, patients from Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states will no longer need to travel to metro cities for complex surgeries, gaining access to world-class, affordable care closer to home.
