In a significant milestone for super-specialty healthcare in the region, AIIMS Jammu has successfully performed its first orbital tumour surgery, marking the official launch of its Oculoplasty and Orbital Services.
The complex surgery was led by Dr. Nazia Anjum and her dedicated team, including Dr. Asma Jabeen (Senior Resident) and Dr. Supritam Das (Junior Resident). The case involved a middle-aged patient from rural Jammu who had been suffering from proptosis (eye bulging), visual disturbances, and discomfort for several months. With prior limited access to specialized care, the patient had gone undiagnosed until evaluated at AIIMS Jammu using advanced CT and MRI imaging.
The scans revealed a high-risk orbital tumour compressing key eye structures. The team, under the expert supervision of Dr. Nitin Kumar (Associate Professor) and with clinical guidance from Dr. Bhavani Raina, Head of Ophthalmology, planned and executed a successful orbitotomy, removing the tumour in toto without complications.
“This surgery posed both a challenge and an opportunity,” said Dr. Nazia Anjum. “It represents our commitment to providing cutting-edge ophthalmic care locally.”
The patient showed excellent post-operative recovery, with restored eye alignment, improved symptoms, and no vision loss. The procedure was made possible with the critical support of the anaesthesia team—Dr. Sunaina Gupta, Dr. Raksha Kundal, Dr. Salomi Gupta, and Dr. Bindu—who ensured patient safety throughout.
Prof. (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, lauded the success as a reflection of the institution’s growing readiness to offer world-class, super-specialty care in underserved regions. “This marks a new chapter in accessible advanced surgery for the people of Jammu and surrounding areas,” he said.
With plans to expand into full-spectrum sub-specialty ophthalmic care, the launch of the Oculoplasty and Orbital Services positions AIIMS Jammu as a key centre for advanced eye treatment in the region.
