The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Germany’s TU Dresden to drive innovation in surgery through artificial intelligence (AI) and deep-tech solutions, aiming to address critical healthcare challenges in India and beyond.
The collaboration focuses on translational research, clinical application of digital technologies, and joint startup incubation to develop cost-effective, next-generation tools for surgical care.
“With a high patient load, we urgently need affordable technology,” said Dr. M.D. Ray, Professor of Surgical Oncology at Dr B R Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS. “Conventional robotic surgeries currently cost INR 2–3 lakh, which is not accessible for many. This partnership could help change that.”
The joint research efforts will initially target three key areas:
Robotic surgeries in oncology
AI integration in cancer surgery
Liquid biopsy, a non-invasive diagnostic tool
Prof. Ursula Staudinger, Rector of TU Dresden, emphasized the significance of the alliance:
“This partnership brings together Germany’s strengths in medically oriented engineering and India’s clinical expertise to create an interdisciplinary research model at the crossroads of engineering, medicine, and future technology.”
TU Dresden is already recognized for its leadership in healthcare innovation through its transCampus collaboration with IIT Madras. The transCampus model fosters integration of engineering, data science, and clinical practice. With AIIMS Delhi now joining as a core partner, the initiative is expected to reach a new level of impact in global medical research and care delivery.
The LoI was officially signed by Prof. Ursula Staudinger and Dr. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS New Delhi.
