The Ministry of Education has established the Translational AI for Networked Universal Healthcare (TANUH) Foundation at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) as a dedicated AI Centre of Excellence in Healthcare.
This initiative, part of the Government of India’s vision of “Make AI in India and Make AI Work for India,” is one of four AI Centres of Excellence set up in premier academic institutions across the country. TANUH, a Section 8 not-for-profit company, aims to advance AI-driven healthcare innovation at scale, focusing on developing and deploying solutions for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) directly at the point of care.
The centre operates as a multidisciplinary hub, bringing together clinicians, data scientists, and AI researchers. Nine IISc faculty members specializing in digital health, machine learning, and public health anchor TANUH’s research programmes, while a core team of executives, engineers, programme managers, and research staff with extensive industry experience enables translation of AI technologies from laboratory research to population-level implementation.
TANUH’s tools are designed for early detection, risk prediction, monitoring, and personalised interventions for high-burden conditions such as oral cancer, breast cancer, retinal diseases, diabetes, and mental health. The solutions incorporate human decision-making, follow responsible AI standards, and are tested alongside doctors and researchers at top national institutions including AIIMS, New Delhi.
TANUH has already launched Aarogya Aarohan, a mobile phone-based AI tool for early detection of oral potentially malignant disorders and oral cancers. Developed by TANUH’s Oral Cancer Screening team in collaboration with AIIMS, ARTPARK, Biocon Foundation, BITS Pilani (Goa), KLE Society’s Institute of Dental Sciences, Triveous, and other partners, the tool is a point-of-care, white-light screening solution.
TANUH works with a wide network of healthcare providers, industry partners, and government bodies to enable large-scale deployment, aiming to deliver AI solutions as Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).
