Abbott has launched Libre Assist, a new AI-powered feature within its Libre app, aimed at helping people living with diabetes make informed, real-time food decisions before eating. The feature was unveiled during CES 2026 and is available at no additional cost to users of the Libre app in the United States.

Unlike traditional food-logging applications that provide feedback only after meals are consumed, Libre Assist is designed to support in-the-moment decision-making. The feature uses generative artificial intelligence to predict how specific food choices may affect an individual’s glucose levels and offers personalised meal guidance before the first bite. After the meal, the app confirms the actual glucose impact using data from Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems.

Libre Assist allows users to either take a photo of their meal or enter a text description. The system analyses the food, identifies key ingredients, and predicts its potential glucose impact through a colour-coded rating system—green for minor impact, yellow for moderate, and orange for major impact. Alongside this, the app provides practical suggestions to help lower glucose spikes, such as ingredient substitutions or meal-ordering strategies.

Following the meal, Libre Assist integrates CGM data to show how the individual’s glucose levels actually responded. This personalised feedback is intended to help users better understand their unique metabolic responses and apply those insights to future food choices.

The feature can be accessed directly within the Libre app through the Insights tab. No separate sign-up, subscription fee, additional purchase, or prescription is required. Users can download the Libre by Abbott app via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to access the feature.

Abbott will showcase Libre Assist at the Las Vegas Convention Center during CES 2026, running from January 6 to 9, highlighting how the technology fits into the broader evolution of digital health and diabetes care.

Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre portfolio, introduced a decade ago, is used by more than 7 million people across over 60 countries. The CGM systems provide real-time glucose readings, helping users understand how food, physical activity, and other factors influence their glucose levels. Abbott notes that Libre systems receive full or partial reimbursement in more than 40 countries.
