Roche Diagnostics Egypt has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement, Medical Supply, and Technology Management (UPA), marking a pivotal advancement in the effort to embed environmental sustainability within Egypt’s healthcare procurement system.
This strategic collaboration aligns with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for Sustainable Development and aims to incorporate green procurement practices, capacity-building, and globally recognized sustainability frameworks throughout the healthcare procurement lifecycle—from planning and sourcing to usage and waste management.
Under the MoU, Roche Diagnostics will serve as a strategic advisor, helping UPA incorporate environmental sustainability into its procurement operations and policy-making. The partnership includes customized training programs, practical workshops, and experience-sharing sessions to build internal capabilities. Additionally, the two parties will co-develop a comprehensive green procurement guideline, grounded in international best practices, to promote environmentally responsible decision-making at every stage of the healthcare supply chain.
Dr. Liliane Kanaan, General Manager of Roche Diagnostics Egypt and North Africa, stated:
“At Roche, we see sustainability as essential to the future of healthcare. Our collaboration with UPA reflects a mutual dedication to creating supply chains that are not only efficient but also environmentally responsible. Together, we’re taking actionable steps to reduce healthcare’s ecological footprint and foster a procurement model that champions both innovation and environmental stewardship.”
This partnership comes at a critical juncture, as sustainability becomes a core component of healthcare policies globally. Environmentally conscious procurement can lead to reduced emissions, safer materials use, and minimized waste—while also delivering cost efficiencies, enhancing supply chain resilience, and improving public health outcomes.
For Roche, this initiative reflects its broader global sustainability strategy, which integrates environmental, social, and economic priorities. The company has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and actively collaborates with suppliers to promote transparency, ethical practices, and carbon reduction across its value chain.
A significant portion of Roche’s emissions stems from its supply network, prompting participation in initiatives like the Sustainability Supplier Engagement Programme, the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), and the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI). Through the MoU, UPA will gain access to these platforms, benefiting from Roche’s global networks, tools, and collaborative opportunities to advance Egypt’s sustainability agenda.
This collaboration positions Egypt to lead in environmentally responsible healthcare procurement, with Roche Diagnostics as a committed partner in building a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable health system.
