Japan has declared a nationwide influenza outbreak as flu cases rise sharply across the country. By 3 October, over 4,000 people have been hospitalised, a fourfold increase compared with the previous week. Currently, 28 of Japan’s 47 prefectures are reporting rising numbers of infections.

This year’s flu season has arrived unusually early, almost five weeks ahead of the usual late November or December start. The early surge has forced hundreds of schools to temporarily close to prevent the spread of the virus.

Health authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary hospital visits to prevent overcrowding. Anyone showing flu symptoms is urged to consult a doctor promptly. Residents and tourists are also being encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible and follow basic hygiene measures, such as frequent handwashing and wearing masks where needed.
