OpenAI has acquired healthcare technology startup Torch in a deal valued at about USD 100 million in equity, marking a major step in the company’s push into AI-driven healthcare services.
The acquisition is intended to strengthen OpenAI’s newly launched ChatGPT Health platform by integrating Torch’s technology for aggregating and analysing personal medical data. Torch has developed systems that pull information from hospitals, diagnostic labs, wearables and consumer health apps into a unified medical profile that can be processed by artificial intelligence.
Torch’s engineering team, including its founders and core developers, will join OpenAI and contribute to the expansion of ChatGPT Health, which allows users to connect and interpret their health records using AI.
Founded in 2024, Torch was built by a small team with prior experience at AI-enabled healthcare provider Forward Health. The startup focused on solving one of healthcare’s most persistent problems — fragmented patient data spread across multiple platforms and providers — by creating a single context engine for medical information.
OpenAI highlighted that the acquisition will help accelerate development of tools that can organise, interpret and personalise health information for users, expanding the role of generative AI from general applications into specialised healthcare use cases.
The move signals OpenAI’s broader strategy to build a stronger footprint in healthcare, using artificial intelligence to support medical data integration, patient understanding and personalised health insights.
