Immunization is one of the most powerful and effective tools provided by modern medicine against some of the world’s most dangerous, preventable diseases, saving the lives of millions of children and people each year. On the occasion of World Immunization Day, it is important to reinforce the benefits of vaccinations not only as a medical intervention, but also as a responsibility towards safeguarding children globally.

Vaccines have helped fight and curb the spread of life-threatening diseases that have previously claimed countless lives worldwide. Some diseases threaten children everywhere — no matter which country they are born in. These universal infections need universal protection. Diseases like polio, tetanus, rubella, pertussis (whooping cough), mumps, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, diphtheria ,measles, rotavirus, pneumococcal and many others can now be easily prevented due to timely and complete immunization. Diseases like smallpox and polio have been eradicated in India  because of effective vaccines, which go on to prove that prevention is always better than cure.

However, the journey towards vaccine coverage for all is not complete; it is an ongoing process. Along with global threats, Indian children are exposed to certain infections that occur more commonly in our region, making some vaccines especially important here. Many parents are still unaware of the importance of vaccines and booster doses that help protect children against comparatively newer and region specific diseases.  Vaccines for typhoid, chickenpox, hepatitis A, influenza, JE, meningococcal disease, and the HPV vaccine for adolescents are also important to protect against serious infections.

In spite of vaccination being accepted and practiced worldwide, there are a few myths and misconceptions that discourage parents from following the recommended vaccination protocols. Common concerns include side effects such as pain, nausea or fever. But these effects are mild and usually temporary. But the benefits of vaccines actually far outweigh these minor side effects.

Vaccines undergo many clinical trials and safety tests before they are approved for use. Even a single dose missed is a lost opportunity to protect your child against dangerous but preventable diseases. Immunization is not about individuals, but rather it is about the health of entire communities. When most children in a given population are immunised, it creates herd immunity and prevents the spread of diseases even among those who cannot be vaccinated.

This World Immunization Day, Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital, Mumbai, urges parents to ensure their children receive every vaccine as per the recommended schedule. Regular follow-ups with your paediatrician and maintaining an updated immunization record are basic steps that can ensure that your children do not miss their vaccination appointments.

Vaccines are among the safest and most effective preventive tools we have to protect our children, our communities, and future generations. This World Immunization Day, let us commit to building a healthier, safer world, one vaccine at a time.
