Union Government Approves 10,023 New Medical Seats In Government Colleges

By Team VOH

The Union Government has sanctioned the addition of 10,023 medical seats in government colleges under Centrally Sponsored Schemes for the financial years 2025–26 to 2028–29, marking a significant expansion in India’s medical education capacity. Between Academic Year (AY) 2020–21 and 2025–26, MBBS seats increased by 48,563 and postgraduate (PG) seats by 29,080, reflecting a consistent growth in medical education infrastructure.

The year-wise addition of PG seats during this period includes 4,983 seats in 2020–21, 4,705 in 2021–22, 2,874 in 2022–23, 4,713 in 2023–24, 4,186 in 2024–25, and 7,619 in 2025–26. This expansion encompasses both MBBS and PG programs across government medical colleges, ensuring greater access to medical education for students nationwide.

The National Medical Commission (NMC), as the apex regulatory authority for medical education, has issued multiple regulations to maintain and enhance the quality of medical training.

These include the Minimum Standards Requirements (MSR), the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) 2023, the Maintenance of Standards of Medical Education Regulations (MSMER-2023), and the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) Curriculum Guidelines 2024. These frameworks provide standardized guidelines for medical education, ensuring that institutions comply with prescribed norms and maintain high-quality education and training standards.

The expansion of seats and implementation of regulatory frameworks aim to strengthen India’s healthcare workforce by increasing training capacity, promoting excellence in medical education, and aligning medical education with contemporary competency-based and evidence-informed practices.
