Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday announced significant customs duty exemptions aimed at easing the financial burden on patients, particularly those undergoing cancer treatment.
Presenting the Union Budget 2026, Sitharaman said the government will exempt basic customs duty on 17 drugs and medicines, a move expected to make critical therapies more affordable and accessible.
In addition, the Finance Minister announced the inclusion of seven more rare diseases under the ambit of customs duty exemptions. This will allow duty-free personal import of drugs, medicines and food for special medical purposes used in the treatment of these conditions.
