Rajnath Singh Highlights Government’s Push for Quality Healthcare in Remote Areas

By Team VOH

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said the government is committed to providing quality healthcare to all citizens, especially those living in remote and island areas, while virtually addressing a Joint Services Multi-Speciality Mega Medical Camp organised by the Indian Navy in Lakshadweep.

The nearly week-long camp at Indira Gandhi Hospital in Kavaratti is the first joint, multi-speciality medical initiative held in the islands. As per the media reports, Singh said the camp showed the Navy’s growing role in nation-building and humanitarian service, noting that a Tri-Services team from the Armed Forces Medical Services brought advanced diagnostic facilities, specialist consultations and planned surgeries, including cataract operations, directly to island residents.

He said comprehensive screening, early diagnosis, timely treatment and free medicines would bring long-term health benefits to the local community. The Defence Minister also highlighted government initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat and Jan Aushadhi Kendras aimed at improving access to affordable healthcare.

After the inauguration, the Naval Chief interacted with patients and distributed spectacles, eye drops and medicines to those who underwent cataract surgery. The event was attended by senior naval and medical officials, civil administration representatives and local residents.

The Indian Navy is conducting similar multi-speciality camps across five islands—Amini, Androth, Agatti, Kavaratti and Minicoy—to ensure wider reach. Dedicated ophthalmology and surgical teams have been deployed at key locations to meet treatment needs.

A total of 29 medical officers, two nursing officers and 42 paramedical staff have been deployed, along with additional medical equipment and medicines to support Lakshadweep’s healthcare system. Nearly 50 sight-restoring surgeries were completed in two days.

Along with treatment, residents were also counselled on preventive healthcare, lifestyle changes, mental well-being, nutrition, millets and yoga.
