Karnataka’s Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil has called for the establishment of NIMHANS‑like mental health and neuroscience institutes across India to expand access to specialised care. The proposed expansion includes new regional centres in Mysuru and Kalaburagi to decentralise services beyond Bengaluru.
The initiative aims to address a wide spectrum of health challenges, including neurovascular diseases, infectious conditions, psychiatric and neurological disorders, trauma cases, and the growing burden of mental health issues among youth, geriatric populations, and vulnerable groups.
A north‑campus polytrauma centre and upgraded outpatient services at NIMHANS are planned, alongside tele‑mental‑health programmes and community outreach initiatives to improve early intervention, preventive care, and public awareness.
The move is part of a broader effort to strengthen India’s mental health infrastructure and ensure equitable, nationwide access to advanced neurological and psychiatric care.
