The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong Bill, 2026, clearing the way for the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) in Shillong to be upgraded into a state university.
The move, cleared at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, will empower the institute to independently confer degrees to public health graduates and scholars, strengthening its academic autonomy and elevating its role in higher education and research in the field of public health in the northeast.
Officials said the upgrade is expected to position IIPH Shillong as a centre of excellence for public health research and capacity building, enhancing the quality of education and training in the region and contributing to improved public health systems across the northeast.
In addition to the university bill, the Cabinet granted a no-objection certificate (NOC) for infrastructure expansion at Eco Resort in Nongkhlaw, covering furnishing, operation and maintenance works.
It also approved a state policy to promote anganwadi workers to supervisory roles, aiming to improve career progression for frontline workers and strengthen the functioning of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) framework in Meghalaya.
