Karnataka Govt Plans Rare Diseases Policy To Support Patients

By Team VOH

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao announced that the state’s Rare Diseases Policy will be released shortly, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening support for patients living with rare conditions.

The announcement was made at the 11th edition of Racefor7, an annual awareness marathon organised by the Organization for Rare Diseases India (ORDI) in Bengaluru on February 22. The minister flagged off the event, which aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with rare diseases and the need for improved diagnosis, treatment access and long-term care.

Racefor7 is a nationwide advocacy initiative led by ORDI, a patient advocacy organisation working to address gaps in care, policy and awareness related to rare diseases in India. The event highlights the importance of early diagnosis and equitable access to treatment, while calling for coordinated efforts among healthcare professionals, policymakers and communities.

This year’s theme, “Run for Rare for Lasting Care,” focused on building a sustainable and inclusive ecosystem for patients and caregivers.

The proposed state policy is expected to complement national efforts in rare disease management and provide structured support mechanisms for affected families across Karnataka.
