India Honoured for Eliminating Trachoma at 78th World Health Assembly

At the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, awarded India the Certificate of Elimination of Trachoma as a Public Health Problem. This milestone highlights India’s significant progress in disease elimination and its dedication to preventive healthcare and universal health coverage.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) noted that the recognition reflects the country’s sustained public health efforts and commitment to the global vision of “Health for All.” The announcement came during India’s participation in the assembly, which officially began on May 19. The Indian delegation is being led by Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary at the MoHFW.

“Today marks the commencement of the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva. The Indian delegation, led by Punya Salila Srivastava, is actively participating in the Assembly, reflecting India’s continued commitment to strengthening global health systems and advancing international collaboration,” the ministry stated.

India’s active role at the Assembly reinforces its position in global health governance. It reflects the nation’s leadership in tackling major public health challenges, including neglected tropical diseases like trachoma.

The Assembly, held under the theme “One World for Health,” runs from May 19 to 27. Key discussions include the adoption of the Pandemic Agreement and deliberation on the WHO’s Proposed Programme Budget for 2026–2027. Other highlights include a Ministerial Roundtable on health data and sustainable financing (May 21), and the presentation of public health awards (May 23).

Teodoro Javier Herbosa of the Philippines has been elected President of the 78th Assembly. A major concern this year is WHO’s financial sustainability, as the U.S. considers withdrawal and a proposed 20% increase in member contributions remains uncertain. Governance and staffing reforms are also on the agenda.
