Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday said the State government is considering the establishment of four additional medical colleges to address the shortage of doctors across Odisha.
The announcement was made during a public meeting in Mayurbhanj district, where President Droupadi Murmu laid the foundation stone for an AYUSH Hospital-cum-Ayurvedic College at Rairangpur.
The proposed medical colleges form part of a broader plan to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the State. Alongside allopathic services, the government aims to expand education and facilities in Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Dental, Nursing, and allied healthcare sectors. The Chief Minister also said that Arogya Mandirs would be further strengthened to ensure round-the-clock healthcare services in rural areas.
Officials noted that Odisha currently has 11 State-run medical colleges and six private medical colleges. The Chief Minister reiterated that funding would not be a constraint for the development of Mayurbhanj district, highlighting its significance as the birthplace of President Murmu.
The State government has also allocated ₹50 crore in the 2025–26 Budget for the development and conservation of the Similipal biodiversity region. In addition, a detailed project report worth ₹100 crore has been prepared for the development and beautification of the Maa Kichakeswari Temple, the presiding deity of Mayurbhanj.
The Chief Minister explained that the projects launched by the President reflect the coordinated efforts of the Central and State governments towards sustainable development in Mayurbhanj and across Odisha. He added that these initiatives are aimed at strengthening human resources and creating long-term benefits for youth, farmers, tribal communities, and women, contributing to the overall development of the region.
