Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma handed over appointment letters to 3,420 candidates for technical and non technical posts in the state health sector at a function held in Guwahati on Monday, aimed at strengthening Assam’s healthcare workforce.
The appointments include 1,403 technical and 595 non technical posts under the Directorate of Medical Education and Research, 828 technical posts under the Directorate of Health Services, 592 technical posts under the Directorate of Health Services Family Welfare, and two technical posts under the Directorate of AYUSH. With these appointments, the total number of government jobs provided during the tenure of the present state government has reached 1,45,449.
The recruitment drive forms part of the state government’s broader employment strategy, following the completion of its initial target of one lakh government jobs and progression towards a new goal of providing two lakh jobs. Fresh appointments to Grade III posts through the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination are scheduled for January 10 next year, while appointment letters for a large number of Grade IV posts are to be issued before January 20. The process of issuing appointment letters to candidates already selected for various government departments is expected to continue until February next year.
Recruitment has been prioritised in departments including Home, Health and Education, with the state government focusing on transparent and merit based selection processes. Over the past four and a half years, large scale recruitment has been undertaken to address workforce gaps, particularly in the healthcare sector.
The event also highlighted the expanding role and responsibility of healthcare personnel, whose work is directly linked to patient outcomes. Emphasis was placed on improving access to healthcare for poor and underprivileged populations, strengthening public trust in government hospitals and ensuring dignity in service delivery. Government hospitals across the state are reported to be equipped with improved medical facilities following recent infrastructure upgrades.
Concerns were noted regarding the rising number of children affected by cerebral palsy in Assam. Data from health camps conducted across the state indicated that around 30,000 children were examined, with nearly 6,000 identified as affected, suggesting the total number of cases statewide could be significantly higher. Strengthening maternal and child healthcare, ensuring safe institutional deliveries and minimising human error during childbirth were identified as key measures to reduce such cases.
The state’s healthcare expansion includes steps to establish one medical college in every district, alongside recruitment of doctors, nurses and allied health workers. These initiatives have contributed to a gradual decline in maternal and infant mortality rates in Assam.
Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ashok Singhal, Guwahati Lok Sabha MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi and other dignitaries were present at the event.
