Akums and Zambia Partner to Establish Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility

Akums, a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer, has partnered with the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) to establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Zambia. The initiative aims to ensure affordable, high-quality generic medicines for Zambian patients and eventually extend exports to neighboring African nations, including Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique.

The facility will be set up under a joint venture (JV) headquartered in Zambia, with Akums holding a 51% stake and GRZ (through its nominated state entity) holding 49%. A joint Board will oversee the venture. The JV is expected to be formalized by Q3 FY26, with construction to follow, and commercial supplies beginning by Q3 FY28, subject to timely approvals.

The plant will manufacture a range of products including tablets, hard gelatin capsules, liquids, injectables, and beta-lactam medicines. Both partners will contribute resources in proportion to their shareholding.

To meet immediate healthcare needs, the Zambian government has also committed to purchasing essential medicines worth a minimum of USD 25 million annually from Akums’ Indian facilities in 2026 and 2027.

With Zambia’s economy projected to grow at 6% in 2025 and its pharma market expanding at over 10% annually to surpass USD 300 million by 2030, the partnership marks a significant step towards reducing import dependence and advancing self-reliance in healthcare. The venture also unlocks export opportunities across SADC nations, representing a market of 450 million people.

"We are proud to partner with GRZ to deliver affordable medicines and strengthen Zambia’s healthcare system. This marks Akums’ first manufacturing partnership outside India," said Mr. Sanjeev Jain, Managing Director at Akums.
