Piyush Goyal Inaugurates Key MedTech Manufacturing Milestones at AMTZ, Marking a Major Boost for India’s Healthcare Innovation

By Team VOH

India’s MedTech ecosystem reached an important milestone on November 15 as Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Member of Parliament for North Mumbai, visited the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) in Visakhapatnam. Spanning 270 acres, AMTZ has grown into one of the world’s largest and most advanced medical device manufacturing clusters, housing over 150 companies involved in research, engineering, and production of critical medical technologies.

During the visit, the Minister unveiled two major additions to India’s healthcare manufacturing sector—3i MedTech, a next-generation MRI manufacturing initiative, and a new Cathlab production facility by Innovation Imaging Technologies Pvt Ltd (IITPL). The launch of 3i MedTech marks a significant step toward self-sufficiency in high-end diagnostic imaging systems, offering precise and affordable MRI solutions designed in collaboration with AMTZ. Simultaneously, the commissioning of IITPL’s Cathlab unit strengthens India’s domestic capability in advanced cardiac imaging systems, reducing reliance on imports and encouraging local innovation.

While interacting with industry leaders across the AMTZ campus, the Minister recognised the strategic role played by Dr Jitendra Sharma, Managing Director and Founder CEO of AMTZ, in shaping a globally competitive MedTech ecosystem in India. He acknowledged the cluster’s unique ability to support the entire spectrum of medical device manufacturing—from essential supplies to complex technologies such as MRI systems—highlighting India’s readiness to lead in global healthcare innovation.

Dr Sharma underscored AMTZ’s core mission of converting scientific research into socially impactful and market-ready medical products. He also noted AMTZ’s distinction as the only MedTech cluster globally to host both a WHO Centre and a World Trade Centre, reflecting its international relevance and expanding footprint.

The visit paved the way for several new collaborations, with strategic MoUs signed between AMTZ and institutions including the Artificial Limb Centre, NIEPID, NCIDC, Poonawalla Fincorp, IIMM, IBSC, KIHT, and Dhanush Healthcare Systems. These partnerships aim to advance industry–academia cooperation, skill development, and financing opportunities for MedTech innovation.

The event concluded with the ceremonial flag-off of the Varex Detector export, symbolising India’s growing capability not only to manufacture advanced diagnostic components but also to supply them to global markets.
