Philips Receives FDA Clearance for AI-Powered MRI Tool 'SmartSpeed Precise'

Philips has announced that it has received FDA 510(k) clearance for SmartSpeed Precise, its next-generation deep learning-based MRI reconstruction technology.

SmartSpeed Precise enables MRI scans up to three times faster while delivering images that are up to 80% sharper than previous techniques. The solution is now approved for clinical use across all Philips 1.5T and 3.0T MRI systems, including the company’s large existing installed base.

The software combines Philips’ proven Compressed SENSE acceleration engine with two AI models — one for denoising and the other for image sharpening and anti-ringing correction — delivering enhanced image quality and operational efficiency.

“This FDA clearance is a strong endorsement of Philips’ leadership in AI-driven MRI innovation,” said Ioannis Panagiotelis, Business Leader for MR at Philips. “SmartSpeed Precise addresses the everyday challenges faced by clinicians, allowing for faster and sharper scans with simplified workflows. Our goal is to make high-quality imaging more accessible, efficient, and patient-friendly.”

The solution leverages Compressed SENSE to undersample raw imaging data, reducing acquisition time. Then, two sequential AI algorithms process the images — first removing noise, then enhancing edge clarity and eliminating visual artifacts like ringing. This fully automated process activates with a single preset selection, integrating capture and reconstruction into a streamlined workflow.

Designed with efficiency in mind, SmartSpeed Precise offers single-click operation, helping address workforce shortages and reduce patient backlogs. Philips reports that brain MRI scans can be completed in as little as seven seconds, and breast MRI acquisition times have been cut by up to 50%.

“SmartSpeed Precise allows us to achieve what once seemed impossible—faster and clearer MRIs with minimal effort,” said Dr. Julian Luetkens, Professor of Radiology at University Hospital Bonn. “In our breast MRI studies, scan times were reduced by half, and image quality surpassed that of earlier Compressed SENSE protocols. This is truly a breakthrough.”

SmartSpeed Precise is available both as a feature on new Philips MRI scanners and as an upgrade for existing 1.5T and 3.0T systems.
