Yatharth Hospital Successfully Performs Thumb Reattachment Surgery With Microsurgical Technique

By Team VOH

Doctors at Yatharth Hospital, Greater Noida, have successfully reattached a completely severed thumb of a local electrician using advanced microsurgical techniques, demonstrating the critical role of timely intervention in severe limb injuries.

The patient sustained the injury while operating a grinder machine at work, which slipped and caused the thumb to be completely severed at the base. Multiple hospitals had declined treatment due to the complexity of the case, but the patient was brought to Yatharth Hospital on the advice of an acquaintance, where immediate emergency care was provided.

Recognising the urgency, the patient was shifted directly to the operation theatre. A team of three plastic surgeons, including specialists in reconstructive and microsurgery, performed a complex replantation procedure lasting approximately four and a half to five hours. The most challenging aspect of the surgery involved reconnecting the tiny blood vessels and nerves to restore proper circulation and function.

Following the procedure, the patient is reported to be stable and recovering well, regaining movement and function in the reattached thumb. This case underscores the importance of rapid referral, specialised surgical expertise, and access to advanced microsurgical facilities—services available in only a limited number of hospitals in India.

Yatharth Hospital continues to highlight its capabilities in complex reconstructive procedures, including microsurgical replantation, offering hope for patients suffering severe traumatic injuries.
