Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai has introduced India’s first tele-robotic surgery programme in partnership with the Dhirubhai Ambani Occupational Health & Community Medical Centre in Jamnagar, powered by Reliance Jio’s high-speed digital connectivity.
This initiative marks a significant shift in how advanced surgical care is delivered in India by enabling expert surgeons at the Mumbai hospital to perform and guide robotic-assisted operations from a distance for patients at partner centres across the country.
The programme is designed to overcome longstanding barriers that have prevented many patients in non-metro and remote regions from accessing complex surgical interventions. By reducing the need for long-distance travel and connecting specialised expertise with local healthcare facilities, it aims to narrow the gap between urban and rural surgical care and improve timely access to high-precision procedures.
The first surgery under this initiative was successfully conducted at the Community Medical Centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with clinical leadership from the hospital’s urology-oncology department. This achievement establishes a new milestone in India’s telemedicine and robotic surgery landscape, showcasing how advanced digital networks and robotic systems can work together to deliver complex clinical care remotely.
The tele-robotic platform integrates state-of-the-art robotic surgical technology with secure, low-latency connectivity, allowing seamless real-time coordination between the remote surgeon and on-site medical teams. The programme also prioritises ongoing mentoring and capacity-building for local clinicians, strengthening surgical competencies and clinical collaboration at partner sites.
