The Mohan Foundation has officially launched its organ transplant programme at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the institutions on April 17.
As part of the programme’s initiation, Vincent Debbarma has been appointed as the state coordinator for Tripura and assumed his responsibilities in June. He is currently undergoing specialised training, and a dedicated office has been set up within the hospital to support the Foundation’s activities. In the coming weeks, an additional transplant coordinator will be appointed to further strengthen operations in the state. A team from the Foundation is also scheduled to conduct training and awareness programmes for doctors and nurses at AGMC and GBP Hospital in the last week of June.
To ensure effective implementation and oversight, a steering committee is being formed in collaboration with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTO), Tripura. This committee will supervise the programme’s progress and encourage healthcare professionals across the state to actively participate in transplant procedures.
The collaboration with the Chennai-based Mohan Foundation is poised to significantly enhance the organ donation and transplant ecosystem in Tripura.
Dr Shankar Chakraborty, Medical Superintendent of AGMC and GBP Hospital, stated that the establishment of the organ transplant unit, with an initial focus on liver transplants, will bring transformative changes to the healthcare landscape in Northeast India.
