A24-year-old patient with a relapsed brain Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) was successfully treated at Manipal Hospital, Baner, Pune, using single-session Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). The AVM, previously treated with GammaKnife in 2021, had recurred in an eloquent area of the brain—regions critical for essential neurological functions—making conventional neurosurgery highly risky.
AVM is a rare vascular disorder characterized by abnormal connections between arteries and veins through fragile, immature blood vessels. When occurring in the brain, AVMs can be asymptomatic until a rupture causes bleeding, potentially leading to severe complications such as paralysis or even death. Treatment options typically include surgical removal, embolization, or targeted radiation therapy.
Dr. Karan Chanchlani, Consultant – Radiation Oncology at Manipal Hospital, Baner, explained, “This was a technically demanding case due to the AVM’s location in a highly sensitive area of the brain and the patient’s prior unsuccessful GammaKnife treatment. Using advanced imaging techniques like MRI with TOF sequences and Digital Subtraction Angiography, we accurately identified the nidus and analyzed the previous treatment’s shortcomings. A single high-precision SRS session was planned and executed with sub-millimeter accuracy using our frameless system, delivering a focused, high dose of radiation non-invasively. The procedure went smoothly, and the patient is now stable, ambulatory, and recovering well.”
Unlike conventional surgery, the SRS approach offers a non-invasive alternative, minimizing the risks of neurological damage while ensuring targeted treatment. The precision of the radiation delivery is especially critical in treating lesions located in functionally important areas of the brain.
Mr. Anand Mote, Hospital Director at Manipal Hospital, Baner, added, “This case highlights our commitment to offering cutting-edge medical solutions. The successful treatment of a relapsed AVM reflects our focus on safety, accuracy, and innovation. At Manipal Hospital Baner, we continuously strive to deliver patient-centric care by leveraging advanced technology and multidisciplinary expertise.”
The success of this treatment marks a significant milestone in the management of complex neurological conditions using modern radiosurgical techniques.
