Gleneagles Doctors Conduct Breakthrough Robotic Hysterectomy

By Team VOH

Gleneagles Hospitals, Chennai, has achieved a major milestone in minimally invasive surgery by removing a 4.95 kg fibroid uterus—one of the largest recorded globally—through a robotic-assisted hysterectomy. The enlarged uterus was nearly the size of a 36-week pregnancy.

The procedure was led by Dr. Padmapriya Vivek, Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Robotic Surgeon at Gleneagles Hospitals, using the Da Vinci XI Surgical System. The patient, 47-year-old Ramya, a school teacher from Chennai, had been suffering from severe abdominal bloating and heaviness. MRI scans later revealed multiple large uterine fibroids measuring between 12 and 20 cm.

After thorough evaluation, the team proceeded with a robotic-assisted total hysterectomy, a highly challenging choice given the uterus’ size and vascularity. Despite the complexity, the surgery was completed in four hours with minimal blood loss and no complications. The patient was able to walk the next morning and was discharged the following day.
