From Labs To Life: Bengaluru’s Tata‑IISc Med School To Pioneer Integrative Healthcare

By Team VOH

Bengaluru is set to host a new medical school at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), designed to offer an integrative approach to healthcare by combining modern medicine with traditional medical knowledge. The Tata IISc Medical School will leverage IISc’s existing strengths in science, engineering, and technology to create a unique model of medical education and research in India.

The medical school will operate alongside the newly planned Bagchi–Parthasarathy Hospital, which is expected to be fully functional by the second half of 2026. This hospital will provide advanced healthcare facilities while serving as a practical training ground for medical students. The integration of research and clinical practice aims to bridge gaps between conventional medical approaches and alternative therapies, fostering a holistic approach to patient care.

Starting in 2027, the Tata IISc Medical School will introduce a dual MD–PhD programme. This initiative is designed to cultivate interdisciplinary expertise by combining rigorous clinical training with advanced research skills. Students will be trained to conduct studies that draw from both modern medical science and traditional healthcare practices, creating opportunities for innovation in diagnosis, treatment, and patient care.

The establishment of the medical school underscores Bengaluru’s growing role as a hub for advanced scientific and medical research. It also signals a shift in medical education in India, moving towards models that embrace integrative healthcare, evidence-based research, and a holistic understanding of human health. The school and hospital together are expected to attract talent from across the country and internationally, creating a center of excellence in medical training and research.
