CK Birla Hospitals–CMRI, Kolkata has inaugurated a dedicated Bone Bank, becoming the first private healthcare facility in Eastern India to establish an operational bone banking unit. Built to meet national and international regulatory standards, the new facility enhances the hospital’s capabilities across musculoskeletal care, trauma, oncology, and reconstructive surgery by ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality bone allografts.
Bone banks are essential in modern surgical practice, providing timely access to safe, processed grafts that undergo rigorous donor screening, microbiological testing, sterilisation, and full traceability. By minimising the need for autograft harvesting—often associated with additional surgical time, donor-site discomfort, limited graft availability, and higher morbidity—the Bone Bank at CMRI aims to improve surgical outcomes, reduce operating-room time, and enhance patient recovery.
The new facility will offer a wide range of graft options, including structural corticocancellous blocks, morselised grafts, and cancellous chips, giving surgeons greater flexibility based on clinical requirements. Ready-to-use grafts are expected to broaden treatment possibilities for patients undergoing tumour reconstruction, complex fracture repair, non-union surgeries, spinal fusion, and deformity correction.
Beyond clinical use, the bone bank will serve as a platform for research, surgical training, and innovation within CK Birla Hospitals–CMRI. It will support resident training, simulation-based learning, and comparative studies on graft processing techniques. Equipped with trained personnel, validated protocols, and robust cold-chain systems, the centre is positioned to become a regional hub for safe, ethical bone procurement, processing, and distribution, the hospital said in a press statement.
