Aster DM Healthcare Launches Advanced Global Epilepsy Institute

By Team VOH

Aster DM Healthcare has launched a dedicated epilepsy-care unit — the Aster Global Institute for Advanced Epilepsy Care at Aster CMI Hospital, enhancing the group’s specialised neuroscience capabilities.

The institute is set up to provide comprehensive care for epilepsy patients, including advanced diagnostics, medical management and surgical interventions for cases where medication fails to control seizures (drug-resistant epilepsy).

The new facility is supported by multiple Aster hospitals — including Aster RV Hospital, Aster Ramesh Hospital (Guntur), and Aster MIMS Hospital (Calicut) — enabling a networked approach to epilepsy care across the chain.

The move addresses a significant clinical need. Globally, nearly 30% of epilepsy patients do not respond to standard medication and require advanced treatment.

In India, an estimated 10–12 million people live with epilepsy, while up to 90% of patients in rural areas may be untreated — highlighting large gaps in access and awareness.

Prior to this launch, Aster Hospitals had already performed 266 epilepsy-related surgeries, supported by a multidisciplinary team spanning neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine, neurophysiology, anaesthesia and rehabilitation demonstrating existing experience in managing complex epilepsy cases.

With the opening of the Aster Global Institute for Advanced Epilepsy Care, Aster aims to expand access to high-end epilepsy treatment and address unmet needs in epilepsy care, particularly for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy who need specialised diagnostics and surgical options.
