Apollo Hospitals Launches Institute of Clinical Obesity and Metabolism in Navi Mumbai

Apollo Hospitals inaugurated a state-of-the-art Institute of Clinical Obesity and Metabolism at its Navi Mumbai facility on Saturday. The new centre aims to combat India’s growing obesity crisis through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates medical, nutritional, psychological, and lifestyle support tailored to individual needs.

The launch comes at a critical time, as India faces a rising burden of obesity, especially in urban and semi-urban populations. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is a major risk factor for chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers — diseases often linked to systemic inflammation and long-term organ damage.

Childhood obesity is a particularly alarming concern. A 2022 study published in The Lancet revealed that India had the highest number of obese children globally, with 12.5 million children aged 5 to 19 affected — a sharp increase from just 0.4 million in 1990. Experts attribute this trend to unhealthy dietary habits, high intake of processed foods and sugary beverages, decreased physical activity, and excessive screen time.

In response to these challenges, the new institute will offer personalised weight management solutions, with a special focus on children and adolescents. At a press conference on Friday, hospital representatives emphasized the clinic’s commitment to early diagnosis, scientific intervention, and long-term health transformation.

Dr. Sanjay Khare, Chief Consultant and Director of Bariatric Medicine at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, stated, “Obesity is no longer just a cosmetic issue — it’s a serious medical condition fueling early-onset diabetes, hormonal imbalances, and heart disease. Our clinic is rooted in evidence-based practices aimed at lasting change.”

Mr. Arunesh Punetha, Regional CEO – Western Region, Apollo Hospitals, added, “This initiative reflects Apollo’s broader preventive healthcare mission. Our multidisciplinary team — including physicians, dietitians, psychologists, physiotherapists, and wellness experts — will work together to provide comprehensive care.”

The launch of this institute represents a critical step toward addressing one of India’s most pressing public health challenges. Through its holistic and community-focused model, Apollo Hospitals seeks to inspire lasting lifestyle changes and improve overall health outcomes for individuals and families alike.
