Apollo Hospitals Becomes First in India and South Asia to Complete 5,000 Liver Transplants

By Team VOH

Apollo Hospitals Group has marked a historic milestone in Indian and South Asian healthcare by completing 5,000 liver transplants under its Apollo Liver Transplant Program. With this achievement, Apollo becomes the first hospital group in the region to reach this landmark, reflecting more than 25 years of clinical innovation and care for patients from over 50 countries.

The program’s journey began with a defining moment on 15 November 1998, when Apollo performed India’s first successful pediatric liver transplant. The recipient, a 20-month-old child with biliary atresia, went on to recover fully, later becoming a practicing doctor and a parent—symbolising the long-term impact of advanced transplant care.

Since then, Apollo has led multiple firsts in liver transplantation, including ABO-incompatible procedures and combined liver–kidney transplants. The program has treated infants as young as four months and weighing just 3.5 kg. Its national significance was recognized through a commemorative postal stamp issued by the Government of India—the only liver transplant program in the country to receive this honor.

From November 15, 1998, to October 10, 2025, Apollo performed 5,001 liver transplants, comprising 4,391 adult and 611 pediatric procedures, with 700 deceased-donor and 73 combined liver–kidney transplants. The program maintains a success rate exceeding 90%, supported by advanced technology, multidisciplinary expertise, and a robust network of transplant coordinators across India.

Apollo’s liver transplant program is globally regarded for its comprehensive care model, covering complex multi-organ conditions in infants and adults alike. The program emphasizes affordability, long-term recovery, and integrated post-transplant support. Its international collaborations include surgeon training, fellowships, standardized transplant protocols, and continuous clinical mentorship, helping strengthen transplant programs across the Global South.

With this milestone, Apollo Hospitals reinforces its commitment to expanding access to world-class liver transplantation—the gold-standard treatment for end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Planned new centers and global partnerships aim to make high-quality transplant care accessible to patients regardless of geography, strengthening Apollo’s leadership in transplant medicine across India and beyond.
