Pharmacists Urged to Embrace AI as a Collaborative Tool to Enhance Patient Care

On World Pharmacists' Day, experts in Bengaluru emphasized the importance of Indian pharmacists adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a supportive tool rather than viewing it as competition. The discussion, organized by the Food and Drug Administration, Karnataka, highlighted the evolving role of community pharmacists in the era of AI.

Dr. Indu Shankar, a seasoned pharmacist involved in training and establishing pharmacies nationwide, stressed that while AI can handle tasks like drug dispensing and analyzing patient histories, it cannot replace the personalized care provided by pharmacists. He emphasized that patients seek reassurance and trust from their local pharmacists, a role that technology cannot replicate. AI should be seen as an aid in addressing challenges such as dispensing errors, medication adherence issues, and inventory management.

Experts also underscored the need for pharmacists to continuously upgrade their skills. In developed countries, community pharmacists are considered medicine experts, collaborating closely with doctors to understand drug interactions. Dr. Shankar highlighted that Indian pharmacists should aspire to reach this level of expertise, evolving into clinical consultants and digital health experts, thereby expanding their roles in preventive care and public health.

Additionally, the importance of patient counseling was emphasized, particularly in combating antimicrobial resistance and adverse drug reactions. Dr. Vithya T, head and professor at Al Ameen College of Pharmacy, pointed out that physicians might not always have the time to counsel patients about the effects of medicines. However, community pharmacists can dedicate time to educate patients about drug-food and drug-drug interactions, thereby preventing adverse reactions. She cited a case where a 33-year-old woman died of kidney failure after consuming antibiotics continuously for three months, underscoring the critical role pharmacists play in safe medication practices.

In conclusion, the integration of AI into pharmacy practice offers significant potential to enhance patient care. By embracing AI as a collaborative tool and focusing on personalized patient interactions, pharmacists can continue to play a pivotal role in healthcare, ensuring safe and effective medication use.
