The Mayo Clinic has announced the integration of NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD with DGX A100 systems into its clinical environment, marking a significant milestone in the application of AI-driven innovation in healthcare. This move aligns with the institution’s strategic transformation agenda, 'Bold. Forward.', aimed at reimagining patient care through cutting-edge technology.
The collaboration with NVIDIA is focused on accelerating the development of foundational AI models, particularly in areas like digital pathology and generative AI, to enhance clinical insights and drive better patient outcomes.
The NVIDIA Blackwell-powered DGX SuperPOD is optimized for handling complex, high-resolution imaging workloads—essential for building robust AI models in pathology. This infrastructure allows Mayo Clinic to accelerate pathology slide analysis and cut down model development time dramatically—from four weeks to just one.
In partnership with Aignostics, Mayo Clinic has already created the Atlas Pathology Foundation Model, trained on over 1.2 million digitized histopathology slides. Atlas is designed to improve diagnostic accuracy while reducing the administrative load on healthcare professionals.
“This computing power, combined with Mayo’s unmatched clinical expertise and a dataset of over 20 million digitized pathology slides, positions us to strengthen and scale our foundation models,” said Jim Rogers, CEO of Mayo Clinic’s digital pathology division.
He added: “We’re rapidly advancing safe and effective AI tools that not only improve patient outcomes but also free up clinicians to focus more on direct patient care. These capabilities will also help expand our partnerships across the healthcare industry.”
This is not Mayo Clinic’s first foray into generative AI. In 2024, it collaborated with Abridge and Epic Systems to launch an ambient documentation solution aimed at streamlining nurse workflows using generative AI, highlighting the institution's broader commitment to technology-led transformation.
The integration of NVIDIA’s powerful AI infrastructure reinforces Mayo Clinic’s position at the forefront of digital healthcare innovation, setting the stage for scalable, impactful AI applications across the clinical spectrum.
