IIT Hyderabad Launches India's First Bioengineering Centre For Lung Health

By Team VOH

India’s first Bioengineering Centre of Excellence for Lung Health has been launched at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) in collaboration with the Institute for Lung Health (ILH), Germany, marking a significant step in interdisciplinary research linking engineering and clinical science.

The newly established centre aims to address the growing national and global burden of respiratory disease by combining bioengineering innovation with clinical insights to advance lung health research and develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools.

Designed as a hub for international collaboration, the centre will focus on developing non‑invasive diagnostics, advanced therapies, disease modelling and personalised approaches to lung and pulmonary care, areas where current technologies face limitations.

Jointly led by Renu John from IIT Hyderabad and Soni Savai Pullamsetti from the ILH as its directors, the centre draws on multidisciplinary expertise spanning biomedical engineering, nanobiotechnology, biomechanics and computational biology, and is expected to strengthen Indo‑German cooperation in biomedical science and engineering.

The initiative responds to challenges such as air pollution and chronic respiratory conditions by enabling cutting‑edge research and talent development in lung health engineering.

The facility was formally inaugurated with participation from IIT Hyderabad’s director B S Murty, along with senior representatives from the ILH and AIG Hospitals, underscoring the centre’s role in bridging laboratory innovation with clinical application.

The launch positions IIT Hyderabad at the forefront of bioengineering research aimed at improving lung health outcomes and training future leaders in the field through advanced interdisciplinary collaboration.
