Google To Back India’s Health Foundation Model With $400,000 Investment

By Team VOH

Google has announced a $400,000 investment to develop India’s health foundation model, aimed at improving clinical efficiency and patient outcomes. The initiative leverages Google’s MedGemma AI model to create India-specific solutions and forms part of broader efforts to advance artificial intelligence in healthcare.

Collaborations include Ajna Lens working with AIIMS clinicians to develop AI tools for dermatology and outpatient department triaging. Researchers at IISc are exploring additional clinical applications to expand the model’s utility across healthcare settings. The resulting health foundation models are planned to be integrated into India’s digital public infrastructure, making them accessible to healthcare providers and the wider ecosystem.

Wadhwani AI is receiving $4.5 million to advance multilingual AI applications for healthcare and agriculture, supporting tools that can serve India’s diverse population. Indic language-focused startups, including Gnani.AI, CoRover.AI, and BharatGen, will receive $50,000 each to develop language-specific AI models, which can support healthcare communication, patient engagement, and localized clinical applications.

These initiatives collectively aim to strengthen India’s healthcare AI capabilities, enabling more efficient, inclusive, and application-focused solutions across clinical care and public health.
