The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is expected to cut about $600 million in federal public health grants to several Democratic-led states, according to a regulatory filing and people familiar with the matter.
The move reflects a shift in funding priorities under the current administration. Under the plan, significant grant awards to California, Minnesota, Illinois and Colorado will be terminated.
The cuts are part of a broader effort by the federal government to rescind unspent public health dollars awarded during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last month HHS temporarily froze roughly $5 billion in Public Health Infrastructure Grants — a decision it reversed within hours — amid concerns about emergency preparedness.
The budget office of President Donald Trump also directed the Department of Transportation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to reclaim more than $1.5 billion from the same states.
