Britain on Tuesday announced a 15% reduction in its contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, pledging £850 million ($1.14 billion) for the 2026–2028 cycle.
The cut comes as the UK, historically one of the fund’s major donors, scales back its aid budget to accommodate higher defence spending amid fiscal pressures.
Despite the reduction, the government said the new pledge is expected to help save up to 1.3 million lives and prevent 22 million new infections globally. Officials added that, in dollar terms, the contribution is “only 5% less” than the previous funding round.
