BD Expands Testing Capabilities With New Urine Collection System To Improve Diagnostic Accuracy

By Team VOH

BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a global medical technology company, has announced the launch of the BD Vacutainer Urine Complete Cup Kit, a three-tube urine collection system designed to expand and support broader testing capabilities from a single urine specimen.

The newly introduced kit is intended to preserve sample integrity, improve workflow efficiency and reduce exposure risks for healthcare workers, while also minimising the need for repeat patient collections. Its third tube design enables clinicians to conduct additional testing without manually transferring urine or collecting a new specimen, thereby helping reduce contamination risks and supporting safer, more efficient patient care.

Urine testing remains a critical, non-invasive diagnostic tool for identifying conditions such as pregnancy, urinary tract infections, metabolic disorders and cancer, as well as for assessing kidney function. Improperly collected or contaminated specimens can lead to inaccurate results, inappropriate treatment decisions or delays in care. A recent study cited in the announcement found that nearly 44% of patients with contaminated urine cultures received inappropriate antibiotic therapy, highlighting the clinical consequences of pre-analytical errors.

Closed-system solutions, including products within the BD Vacutainer Urine Collection portfolio, are designed to minimise contamination risk and enhance efficiency across the urine specimen management continuum, supporting accurate and timely diagnostic outcomes.

The BD Vacutainer Urine Complete Cup Kit includes a sterile urine cup and lid with an integrated transfer device, a tube for culture and sensitivity testing to detect and identify bacteria or fungi causing infection, a tube for urinalysis testing to assess general health and detect signs of disease, a discard tube containing no additive, and a castile wipe for patient preparation prior to sample collection.

The kit is available in the United States with both Hemogard and conventional stoppered tubes. It is compatible with a wide range of diagnostic equipment and can support automated laboratory workflows.

The launch of the BD Vacutainer Urine Complete Cup Kit reflects BD’s focus on strengthening preanalytical processes in diagnostics, aiming to improve specimen quality, reduce contamination-related errors and support more efficient, accurate patient care across clinical settings.
